Massage therapists are often drawn to lymphatic work because it combines precise hands-on technique with the opportunity to help people managing chronic swelling, cancer-related lymphedema, and other lymphatic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But can a massage therapist become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Short Answer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes. Massage therapists who meet Norton School\u2019s admission requirements can enroll in the Full Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) Certification Course and earn the Certified Lymphedema Therapist credential after completing the training and passing the written and practical examinations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norton School currently requires massage therapists to provide proof that they completed a massage therapy training program of at least 500 hours<\/strong> or hold certification through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earning a CLT certificate does not replace a massage therapy license or automatically expand a therapist\u2019s legal scope of practice. State law, licensing rules, employer policies, payer requirements, and the therapist\u2019s individual competence still determine which services may be provided and how they may be represented or billed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terms lymphatic massage<\/em>, Manual Lymph Drainage<\/em>, and lymphedema therapy<\/em> are sometimes used as though they mean the same thing. They do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manual Lymph Drainage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Manual Lymph Drainage, or MLD, is a specialized hands-on technique that uses gentle movements intended to support lymphatic flow. It is one component of lymphedema management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complete Decongestive Therapy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Complete Decongestive Therapy is a broader clinical approach. Its four core components are:<\/p>\n\n\n

    A short course focused only on massage strokes cannot provide the same preparation as a 135-hour CDT program with extensive hands-on instruction and competency testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
